Hands on Guitars opened in 1984, when I graduated Berklee College of Music and was hired to teach the course there on guitar repair and construction. By then, I had a year and a half backlog of work!....and I gradually moved into retail as well. Only two companies ever called to invite me to become a dealer.... one was Fred Gretsch Jr. himself, and the second was Larrivée. One of my clients wrote them about the before and after of two new Larrivée's that I tricked out for him. Jean Larrivée is the first generation 'C.F.Martin' of Canada, he single handedly fathered the lutherie community there....Grit Laskin, Sergei De Jonge, Linda Manzer, any 'heavy' you can think of...they all started in Jean's shop. I've worked on countless famous name brand instruments in my 50 years doing this....NONE of them tops Larrivée for consistency and value. Materials and work are stellar at ALL price points...I can own and play any one I want, and for years my main instrument was an 03 series....it was just that good. I carry a wide variety of models, and because of the consistency of quality materials and build, I can educate a client exactly about what difference a body size or wood combination makes, and they'll leave with the perfect instrument for their creative needs and style. My partnership with Larrivée has been one of the richest experiences I've had in my 50 years in the field...so many happy players!
